Saturday: Pottery Day

Today I loaded the kiln for a bisque firing. Hopefully this time there will be no more exploding pots. I had to spend some time rolling around on the floor to reset the cup that pulls air through the kiln from underneath. It worries me that it had moved so much. That floor is not level.

After starting up the kiln, I threw three extra large bowls. Each one takes ten pounds of clay, so wedging and centering on the wheel is a good challenging workout. One of the bowls did not survive the centrifugal force of the pottery wheel. That happens sometimes. It wouldn’t be too big of a deal if I had a de-airing pugger machine to run the clay back through. But without it, the pile of clay is becoming a little unruly. I really need to do something with that clay.

I'm still trying to think of a good Kickstarter project so that I could afford the pugger.

After cleaning up the mess that throwing clay on wheel makes, I spent some hours mixing up glaze tests in my search for a good deep purple.

Today was a pretty good pottery day.

Learned something

A new word, pugger.

It will be a stretch for me to use this word in everyday conversation..
